Game Viewing

At Daka Plains and Daka Expeditions, game viewing is not just an activity—it’s a constant presence. From your private veranda, the vast Deka floodplains stretch out in all directions, alive with movement. Elephant herds drift silently through the grass, antelope graze in the distance, and predators stalk the edges. Whether you’re relaxing at camp or returning from a drive, wildlife is always part of the experience.

Game Drives

Morning and evening game drives take you deep into some of the most remote and untouched terrain in Hwange. Led by experienced professional guides, each drive brings the chance to track big game, observe elusive predators, and witness life in the bush as it unfolds. With every bend in the road, expect the unexpected—from a lion’s roar echoing through the trees to a herd of buffalo kicking up the dust as they move across the plains.

Guided Walks

Step away from the vehicle and into the rhythm of the land on a guided walking safari. These immersive experiences are where the bush comes alive in the smallest details—animal tracks, the scent of wild herbs, the sound of a distant bird call. Guided by experts with deep knowledge of the terrain, you’ll gain a new appreciation for the delicate balance of this ecosystem and the ancient stories written into the landscape.

Bird Watching

For bird lovers, Daka is a hidden gem. Over 400 species call the region home, from majestic fish eagles to the vivid lilac-breasted roller. Whether you’re quietly observing from camp or on a drive with binoculars in hand, the skies and trees are always alive with movement, colour, and song. Each season brings new migratory visitors and unexpected delights for both casual observers and seasoned birders.

Night Drives

As the sun sinks and the bush takes on a new energy, our private concession allows for a rare privilege—exploring the wild after dark. Night drives reveal the hidden world of nocturnal life: sleek genets darting through the underbrush, owls gliding silently overhead, and perhaps the glint of a predator’s eyes caught in the spotlight. It’s a thrilling, unpredictable glimpse into nature’s secret shift change.

Stargazing

In this remote corner of Hwange, far from artificial lights, the night sky is vast and mesmerizing. After dinner, settle beside the fire or lie back on your deck and watch as the stars blanket the sky. The Milky Way stretches clear across the horizon, and shooting stars streak above as the sounds of the night play softly in the background. It’s a humbling, awe-inspiring way to end your day in the wild.

Yoga

Reconnect with yourself in one of the most peaceful and untouched corners of Africa. At Daka Plains, yoga sessions are offered on an elevated deck overlooking the vast floodplains—where the sounds of nature become your soundtrack and the open sky your ceiling. Whether you're welcoming the day with sunrise stretches or unwinding at sunset, this soulful practice grounds you in the stillness and beauty of the wild.

About Hwange

Hwange National Park is the largest in Zimbabwe, covering an impressive 14,650 sq km, with the main entrance located a two-hour drive or 30-minute flight south of Victoria Falls. The park is named after a local Nhanzwa chief, and was once the royal hunting ground for the Ndebele warrior-king Mzilikazi, before being classified as a protected National Park in 1929.

A truly remarkable ecosystem of flora and fauna

Our private concession borders Botswana and is blessed with natural seeps and springs, which offer a lifeline to wildlife during the dry season. From insects and birds to large mammals and elusive predators, life gathers here, sustained by the rhythm of the land. The diversity of landscapes is just as captivating—ranging from the low hills of the Sinamatella region, to the open, Kalahari-like terrain and small river systems of Deka, the vast Mopani woodlands, and finally, the vlei lines and sweeping savannas in the south of the park. One of our most unforgettable experiences is walking through the widespread Teak forests—a place with a distinct, almost sacred atmosphere, where these ancient stands bear silent witness to a land steeped in timeless, magical history.

"Gentle Giants" roam these vast landscapes

Tracking elephant on foot is both exhilarating and humbling—an experience that leaves a lasting impression. Hearing lions roar through the night and setting out at first light to find them adds a primal edge to every safari. Using skills passed down through generations—reading tracks, signs, wind, and cover—our guides share a deeply personal insight into the wilderness. While many wild areas today are crowded and overused, the remote reaches of Hwange remain untouched. Home to Africa’s largest surviving population of elephants, estimated at over 40,000, these gentle giants move freely across the invisible border between Zimbabwe and Botswana. In the dry season, they gather in immense herds, bringing life to Hwange’s vast and varied landscapes.

A photographer's paradise

Hwange is a haven for photographers, offering an extraordinary diversity of wildlife that makes every frame unforgettable. The park is home to a stunning array of bird species, from the unique Yellow-throated Sandgrouse to the majestic, flightless Ostrich. Mammals abound, with large herds of elephants, buffalo, and the ever-present impala, alongside the rare and elusive Roan and Sable antelope. Few places on earth offer such a rich concentration of creatures, both big and small, providing endless opportunities for captivating photography. With its varied landscapes, vistas, and ecosystems, Hwange is a destination where you could easily spend days exploring, capturing nature’s beauty. Hwange is one of the last great parks on the continent—a true gem for those seeking to capture the essence of the wild.
